An illuminated façade made from DuPont’s Corian high-tech surface is lighting up a new hotel in the City of London, UK.

The Motel One building by Mackay + Partners in the Minories area of London’s financial district is the first commercial building in the UK to adopt the application for the DuPont advanced surface.

Designed by Mackay + Partners for developers Endurance Land & Scottish Widows Investment Partnership, the four star hotel features 291 rooms and comprises two forms: a seven storey “decorative cube” fronting the street and a sixteen storey glass tower to the rear.

Corian was preferred as the exterior cladding material instead of more typical specifications of steel, glass or stone, with approximately 1,000sq m of the high-tech surface used in a 12mm thickness.

The exterior skin for the new building functions both as a sustainable open-jointed rain screen façade and also as a distinctive design feature. Translucent white in colour, it presents a pure and simple finish during daylight hours, while at night backlit designs within certain panels illuminate the structure.

The LED lighting system is on a colour wheel that can be changed via computer controlled dimming and the patterns and hues chosen reflect the Motel One brand. The combination of rain screen cladding with LED lighting is a first for London, according to the architects.
