Following the success of its first such machine, canal dredging specialist Blue Boar Contracts has bought a second Kubota 3.25 tonne KX91-3 mini excavator.

At 7ft wide the machine, which is mounted on a barge, can work in lock chambers and tunnels and under narrow bridges which aren't accessible to the company's existing fleet of 14ft wide, 6.5 tonne excavators.

The KX91-3 has a digging depth of 3180mm/125in and uses either a 1500mm/54in ditching bucket or 450mm/18in digging bucket fitted with teeth. The silt is loaded onto a 20-ton capacity hopper in front of the barge, clean material being spread onto agricultural land adjacent to the canal and contaminated material sent to landfill.

Blue Boar is one of two dredging businesses employed by British Waterways and its first KX91-3 is currently working on the Llangollen Canal in north Wales.

The new machine has also been fitted onto a barge and is undertaking dredging operations on the Peak Forest Canal.

The company owns a smaller 1.5 tonne Kubota as well, which it uses for towpath construction work.
