Signing up for Bath's new spa

Bath-based design company, Mytton Williams has teamed up with local sign specialist, Alpha Sign Systems to design, produce and install all the internal signage for the Thermae Bath Spa.

Mytton Williams was also responsible for creating and developing the entire visual identity for the project, which opened to visitors on 7 August.

The development has involved the restoration of five heritage buildings and the construction of a glass and stone building. It will offer residents and visitors the opportunity to once again bathe in the UK's only natural, thermal waters.

Mytton Williams has been involved with the project from its outset, its brief being to develop a simple and clear identity, reflecting the unique aspects of the Spa and avoiding any confusion with Bath's other attractions.

The signs were produced on opaque acrylic using two of the identity colours, light and dark blue. Some of the signs also feature stainless steel lettering echoing the architecture of the building.

“The aim with the choice of colours for both the signage and identity was to evoke feelings of calmness and relaxation, communicating the entire ethos of the Spa and its healing properties,” explains Steph Weekes, designer at Mytton Williams. “The signs needed to be clear, yet unobtrusive, blending with their surroundings.”

The signage also takes into consideration RNIB standards for new public buildings, so where possible tactile lettering and braille have been used. The signs were manufactured by Alpha Sign Systems, which has worked alongside Mytton Williams on a range of projects over the last five years.
