The Duke of Edinburgh, HRH Prince Phillip attended the opening of a state of the art third generation pitch installed by Banner Sports Surfaces recently.
The brand new artificial pitch was constructed by Banner Sports Surfaces for specialist sports college St Thomas More RC School in Wood Green, London as part of a £3.5m project funded by the Football Foundation and endorsed by the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
As well as the top quality all weather, all year round playing surface the school also now benefits from changing rooms, dance studio and fitness suite, allowing it to become a hub for community sport.
HRH Prince Philip accompanied by officials from the Football Foundation and BskyB, was given a tour of the pitch and the facilities before chatting to teachers and pupils about the new sports complex.
The all weather pitch is suitable for a range of sports including, football, hockey, rugby and athletics training, with third generation artificial pitches now generally considered to offer most of the benefits of playing on natural grass, without the maintenance problems.
As well as encouraging pupils to participate in a wide range of sports at any time throughout the year, the pitch is also being offered for external events to generate extra revenue for the School.
