On 19 April, Arsenal faced Spain's Villareal in the UEFA Champions League semi-final, in what was their last international game at Highbury.
With a reputation of providing one of the best playing surfaces in the Premiership, Arsenal's new pitch - designed and constructed by Hewitt Sportsturf - at their state-of-the-art Emirates Stadium, will incorporate the DD GrassMaster, natural grass re-inforcement system.
DD GrassMaster, from Desso DLW Sports Systems, sees a computer-controlled machine inject over 20 million artificial grass fibres about 20 cm deep into a natural grass pitch.
As the roots of the grass grow, they intertwine with the artificial fibres, anchoring the grass roots to give a very stable grass surface. Both UEFA and FIFA have approved this grass system - already installed at six other Premiership clubs, including Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur - for football at the highest level.
Its installation at the Emirates Stadium will start this week.
Desso DLW Sports Systems specialises in indoor and outdoor sports flooring and has its HQ Belgium and sales offices throughout Europe. It has a turnover of E50 million and is part of the carpet manufacturer Desso, itself owned by Armstrong World Industries.
